Apple supports Epson R-D1?

Well, they really have taken there time over it (several years) but at last it’s here - sort of.

If you are the proud owner of an Epson R-D1 / R-D1s rangefinder you can now enjoy the some of the RAW support users of pretty much every other camera model have. However, I can only get the files to work in iPhoto and on quick-preview (pressing space) in OSX 10.5’s finder. It might also work in Aperture but I don’t have it to test.

Why it doesn’t work where other RAW formats do, namely at the file system level, is a bit of a mystery. You can’t browse to a folder of images in Finder and look at them as thumbnails. You can’t see them in Pathfinder or other tools that use the built-in RAW converter, such as Preview (which just ignores the files if you try to drag-drop).

On the plus side, the colour balance does look better than Adobe’s. Still you’ve been able to open the files with Adobe’s camera RAW plug-in and Lightroom for years. It also works in bridge to allow browsing of folders of image thumbnails.

Hopefully, Apple will promote the RAW support to 100% compatible with finder, etc soon or perhaps it’s just a bug?
