More details on Adobe CS4

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

There’s a feature tour of Photoshop CS4 on Adobe TV and also a piece by Jack Nack giving a detailed list of the new features. Both are worth a look.

If you are interested there are also videos on Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop Extended and Illustrator. Be warned, some of these are quite long.

Flash CS4 has some great new features, a lot of my ‘wants’ have been added. Such as much improved animation editing, H.264 video support…

Creative Suite 4 announced

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Adobe have announced their Creative Suite 4, including Photoshop CS4 and CS4 extended. These run in 64bit on Windows but only 32bit on a Mac (they should be 64bit in a future version).

There’s a new user interface (see this primary review) and the package uses the processing power of the latest graphic cards to improve performance.

3D support (in the extended version) has been improved as well.

There’s lots more on Adobe’s site.

Update

Martin Evening has a post on the changes from CS3 over on Photoshop News.

iPhone 3G PayGo

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

O2 UK have announced the release date for the iPhone G3 on Pay-As-You-Go. It will be available direct from them, Carphone Warehouse and Apple stores as of the 16th of September.

The prices are pretty high at £350 and £400 for the 8 and 16Gb versions but it does include 12 months of ‘unlimited’ Internet usage. After that, you can continue this for £10 per month. The effective price is therefore more like £230 and £280.…

Lacie BigDisk and device disconnection

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

I have a couple of 500Gb Lacie “Big Disks” that I used to use for backup (I’m moving over to a Drobo now). These two Lacie drives had worked faultlessly for about 3 years but a few months back one started to cause me problems.

The symptoms were the drive clicking on and off or spinning up of its own accord. This would frequently cause OSX to show a “Device Disconnected” error. This was quite worrying…

Out-of-office backup

Friday, August 29th, 2008

I’m heading off up to the UK’s newest National Park, The Cairngorms for a break soon and decided to replace my exceedingly slow old backup drive with a brand-spanking-new model.

The issue with the old device was, while it was USB2 compatible it was only really USB1 speed. Transferring of data was at about 1Mb/sec on a good day. Which is very slow if you’ve just finished all your picture labelling for the day and want…

Got a Mac and a Nikon?

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

If you have a Apple Mac and a Nikon you might want to take a look at the press release on the Nikon / Microsoft agreement that’s just been announced.

There was some speculation that the NRW format used in the new Nikon P6000 might be locked into Windows and after seeing this I’m starting to think there may be some grounds for these concerns.

I using Canon equipment at the moment and while I had considered…

Sickly Mac

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

It’s been a while since I last posted because my aging Mac Quad had a bad day the Monday before last.

For whatever reason (and I’m still not 100% sure what it was) the contents of my Applications folder got erased. It appears a symbolic link to this folder in the trash caused the problem. When I partly emptied it using a 3rd application (which shall remain nameless) the link was followed and zap all was…

MobileMe, Tiger and 1Password

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

I’ve decided to give MobileMe a go for syncing my main PowerMac and my MacBook. Hopefully an iPhone at some point too.

I signed up for the trial and in theory it should be a piece of cake to get everything sync’ed. Just download the update on my MacBook (it uses Leopard) and make sure the PowerMac (using Tiger) is updated to 10.4.11. Then it should be all systems go.

However, in reality it’s been a bit…

iBand

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

While having a look at the iPhone App store I came across a link for iBand. They are using MooCowMusic’s "Band" application to create their music.

Despite a number of comments claiming it’s impossible to create ‘real’ music with the programme, iBand seem to have made a pretty good stab at it for such a simplistic instrument (no aftertouch, velocity sensing, etc, etc).

Check out their first song on YouTube and their website. It’s been around a…
