Lacie BigDisk and device disconnection

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

I have a couple of 500Gb Lacie “Big Disks” that I used to use for backup (I’m moving over to a Drobo now). These two Lacie drives had worked faultlessly for about 3 years but a few months back one started to cause me problems.

The symptoms were the drive clicking on and off or spinning up of its own accord. This would frequently cause OSX to show a “Device Disconnected” error. This was quite worrying…

User bookmarking

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

I’ve added user bookmarking buttons to the blog today. These appear on the blog posting lists (standard, search and archive) as well the bottom of each individual posting.

Pressing them allows you to submit the post to any of the 4 services - digg, reedit, delicious and/or stumbleupon. The first 3 require you to have an account to make the submission but stumbleupon seems to allow anyone to add pages.

Sickly Mac

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

It’s been a while since I last posted because my aging Mac Quad had a bad day the Monday before last.

For whatever reason (and I’m still not 100% sure what it was) the contents of my Applications folder got erased. It appears a symbolic link to this folder in the trash caused the problem. When I partly emptied it using a 3rd application (which shall remain nameless) the link was followed and zap all was…

FTP, Transmit vs Interarchy

Monday, July 28th, 2008

I’ve been running a few tests on FTP packages. It’s a long story but basically I’m looking into changing over from Dreamweaver / Contribute to a CMS (Content Management System). Currently, my front runner is Expression Engine.

The reason for the proposed change is that Dreamweaver and Contribute drive me nuts. The versions I’m running (CS3) aren’t very good. They are full of bugs, seriously lacking in helpful management features and seem to get in…

MobileMe, Tiger and 1Password

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

I’ve decided to give MobileMe a go for syncing my main PowerMac and my MacBook. Hopefully an iPhone at some point too.

I signed up for the trial and in theory it should be a piece of cake to get everything sync’ed. Just download the update on my MacBook (it uses Leopard) and make sure the PowerMac (using Tiger) is updated to 10.4.11. Then it should be all systems go.

However, in reality it’s been a bit…

WiFi still broken

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Well OSX 10.5.3 is now out and buried deep in the list of updates is a supposedly more reliable WiFi connection.

So, I updated my MacBook and guess what? It makes little difference. In fact with my Netgear DG834PN router I’d say it might actually be less reliable than before.

My old PowerPC “Quad” which runs 10.4.11 still works much more reliably on exactly the same router.

I need to run some more tests but I have to…

40D firmware 1.0.8 & "ERR 99"

Monday, May 19th, 2008

I’ve now upgraded my Canon 40D to version 1.0.8 of the firmware. When I searched the ‘net I couldn’t find anybody saying it was a bad thing - I always give the upgrades a few weeks before installing just in case Canon pull it. This happened recently with a Nikon upgrade.

It seems to be working fine but it’s not cured my continuing "ERR 99" problems. I found a Canon test on Deal Time, see …

Catching up…

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

I’m slowly rising from my immersion in web-code but it still means I have less time to update the blog at the moment. So, this morning is time for a catch-up on some of the stuff I’ve covered before or come across recently…

The 5D rumours for the 22nd have come to naught - not really a total surprise. Canon may announce something but it’s unlikely that it will be before Photokina. The rumours…

Router upgrades

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

I recently decided to update my Netgear DG834PN router. Previously I’ve performed this over the wireless network link and it has always work perfectly. Still, there’s a first time for everything and this time it failed. :(

The process just didn’t complete and after an hour (it’s only taken a few minutes before) I turned it off and back on. The result was a router which alternatively flashed the power on and self test leds…

40D dust

Friday, February 8th, 2008

I’ve now taken about 3,000 shots with my Canon 40D and overall it’s a good camera. The dust removal system is great, but it’s not perfect.

I decided to check the sensor today and setting the camera to f22, defocusing and shooting at the sky resulted in an image with several dust spots visible. Below is a 100% crop from a section of the sensor…

There are about 22 such spots on the sensor and you…
