Out-of-office backup

Friday, August 29th, 2008

I’m heading off up to the UK’s newest National Park, The Cairngorms for a break soon and decided to replace my exceedingly slow old backup drive with a brand-spanking-new model.

The issue with the old device was, while it was USB2 compatible it was only really USB1 speed. Transferring of data was at about 1Mb/sec on a good day. Which is very slow if you’ve just finished all your picture labelling for the day and want…

WiFi still broken

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Well OSX 10.5.3 is now out and buried deep in the list of updates is a supposedly more reliable WiFi connection.

So, I updated my MacBook and guess what? It makes little difference. In fact with my Netgear DG834PN router I’d say it might actually be less reliable than before.

My old PowerPC “Quad” which runs 10.4.11 still works much more reliably on exactly the same router.

I need to run some more tests but I have to…

Printing book review

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Photography generally ends with a desire to share or display your work in some way. If your intended output is onto paper (or some other material) then you’ll probably find this book very interesting. Particularly if you know little of the methods involved or you just want to get the best possible output.

Harald Johnson’s “Mastering Digital Printing” covers just about everything to do with digital printing from it’s history, costs, finding a printer and why…

40D at 3200 ISO

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

My wife and I recently visited Spain, Seville to be precise. It’s a great place to visit for a few days and a nice bit of ‘winter sun’ for all us stuck in the cold UK. It was also the first holiday I’d taken my new-ish Canon 40D on.

It’s always good to take cameras on trips but I used to dread taking the old 1Ds (Mk1) as it was so very, very heavy. A…

40D mini review

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

I’ve now had the 40D for a few months and I’ve settled into using it quite well. There are a lot of things to like about this camera and a few things which I don’t like in comparison with my old 1Ds (mk1).

I’ll get the bad points out of the way first…

  1. The viewfinder, while it’s very good for a 1.6x cropped camera (certainly much better than my father’s old 300D) it’s not a patch on…

GRD 2 RAW test images

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

I came across a couple of forum postings from a new owner. This one includes test shots from the Ricoh GR Digital II (GRD2) at various ISO (compared to JPEG with and without in-camera noise reduction) and includes links to download the original DNG RAW files. The second posting has a comparison of shots from the GRD2 and GRD (Original Ricoh GR Digital) - again with downloadable DNG RAW files, for both the GRD2 and…

Landscapes & Live View

Friday, October 5th, 2007

Focusing your SLR can be a hit and miss process. The focusing screen even in a full-frame camera isn’t ideal for confirming focus over a depth. That is, you can see if a fully-open lens is in focus but when it’s stopped down it becomes much more difficult.

View cameras have an edge here, you can use a loope on a ground glass plate to confirm the focus of the shot and ensure that all you…

40D, 1st look (from a 1Ds1 user)

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

I’ve sold on my 1Ds Mark 1 (1Ds1) and purchased a stop-gap 40D while I await the release of a 5D replacement - hopefully in the next 6 months. The 40D provides me with 91% of the resolution of the 1Ds1, in a much more compact and light-weight package. It also costs less than I sold on the 1Ds1 for so it’s a win-win (for now).

I thought you might be interested in my observations after…

Contribute CS3

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

I’ve uploaded a new article on Contribute CS3. It’s both a review and a ‘how-to’ for issues with the package. I hope you find it interesting.

If there’s anybody from Adobe reading this - please take note of the article. I’m still using Contribute CS3 (for now) and I’d actually like to continue but with Ecto v3 coming soon, I may be tempted away. ;)

N for frustration

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

I found a link to "N" by Metanet Software on meta-filter the other day. I’ve been playing it off and on for a few days and it’s a great little ‘Flash’ game.

Be warned though, while addictive it will also have you very frustrated in no time. Those levels look so easy but they’re not! ;)

Download your copy from here.

Good luck… You’ll need it!
