Lens vignette

Thursday, April 27th, 2006

After doing my tests for double-filter vignette and blurring I discovered a couple of articles on the subject of natural / optical / mechanical vignettes and the effect of lens hoods on vignettes.

I’ve not spent a lot of time looking for articles on these subjects, but these do seem to be very good. They clearly explain the issues and have made me realise that the tests I performed were not complete.

The problem comes down…

R-D1 first impressions

Wednesday, April 26th, 2006

The camera, 12mm, 21mm and 50mm lenses turned up today. Along with all the rest of the gubbins - lens hoods, UV filters, etc.

First impression?

The camera and the lenses are beautifully put together, particularly the lenses.

It brings back memories of using my Father’s Minolta XG - even the shutter speed display has an echo of the XG. The controls are very ‘old world’ and click audibly when you adjust the shutter speed or aperture. Focus…

Tuesday, April 25th, 2006

Robert White phoned me yesterday to say that my long waited for (it’s been about a month coming into stock) Epson R-D1 has arrived! I paid for it today and it’s now ‘in the post’.

They have managed to secure a number of these cameras at a lower than normal price. If you are interested in one, they are now about 30% cheaper, but there really is a very limited stock - act now.

I have to say this process has been a lot less painful that I was expecting! :D

The reason being a feature of WordPress that I didn’t even know existed, namely the ‘Import’ functions. You can transfer an entire Blogger.com blog automatically.…

As I posted on my old Blogger.com blog, I’m moving over to using Wordpress for my blog and so here it is.

I’ll be moving over the old posts from Blogger.com and adding all the new items exclusively on this blog.

Sorry for all the changes and I hope you’ve managed to stay with me. Enjoy.

25 years and still doing new things

Friday, April 21st, 2006

I came across a new article on Rob Galbraith’s website yesterday about Jens Dresling. It’s an inspiring article because he’s been a newspaper photographer for 25 years, long enough to become easily jaded with your job.

However, Jens has managed to avoid this and instead he has constantly tried new things - setting himself a project each year. It’s a great article and I recommend everyone to read it, particularly if you’re in need of some…
