Video art

Friday, July 28th, 2006

I just remembered the MetaFilter site today - I’ve not visited it in a long time. This and SlashDot (/.) are both very interesting sites.

While SlashDot is technology lead, MetaFilter is a bit different. I followed the link on it to Oliver Laric’s site. It contains what I suppose you would call video art (and music). The link was to 787 pieces of clip art which is mesmerising, but I think Flying Dropkick & Geisterschloss are more interesting.

High end LCD

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

I wrote about my new Dell 2005FP monitors being better than my old Iiyama CRT. Neither of these monitors is particularly ‘high end’, however, Michael Reichmann (on Luminous Landscapes) has just updated his monitor to a new NEC MultiSync 2180WG-LED.

This is most certainly a very ‘high end’ monitor and his tests show it’s an improvement on the Sony Artisan monitor (one of the best around at the time). Although, in the real world it may…

64bit Intel Mac & BT Mighty Mouse

Tuesday, July 25th, 2006

A story on MacNN states that the new 64bit versions of Intel’s dual-core chips will be available early, being offically released on the 27th of this month. This should see the Pro versions of Intel Macs desktops being released and an update to the MacBook Pro - so it is properly 64bit.

I don’t think I’ll be upgrading my Mac Quad any time soon (perhaps when the quad-core Intel chips arrive & all the software goes…

Lightroom for Windows

Thursday, July 20th, 2006

After a very long wait, Windows users can now see what all the fuss has been about.

Adobe Lightroom for Windows (beta) can now be downloaded. You’ll need a log-in, but they are free.

It’s similar to Beta 3 for OSX with a few bit missing, see the article on Photoshop News.

Lumix update, Canon IS and even faster cards

Thursday, July 20th, 2006

Panasonic have released updated versions of their LX1 and FX01 cameras. Both of these (old) models were very interesting cameras. The LX1 because it had a widescreen sensor (16:9) and the FX01 because it was very small with a 28mm lens.

The problem with both of them was noise. It was pretty dreadful on both of these cameras. The company claims that the noise levels are lower on the new models (LX2 and FX07/50, links to…

Contact page fixed

Tuesday, July 18th, 2006

My apologies to anyone who’s tried to use the contact page recently. Since moving servers it appears to have been broken. So much for my QA skills. :(

It’s fixed now and so you should be able to contact me if you need to. :)

More on the N93

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

I wrote a few posts ago about the new Nokia N93, posing a couple of questions about the image quality and if it has proper photographic controls.

Well, I came across this N93 review on Mobile Review (they also have a K800i one) and it appears that it does have real exposure compensation (+1 to -1 stop). What’s disappointing is the quality of the image. It does appear to produce less noisy images than a Sony…

New desktop research…

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

While cruising the ‘net a few days ago I found some interesting bits on some computer UI research. This group are investigating what happens if you take the ‘desktop’ metaphor even further than it’s currently implemented on a computer. The system includes a physics engine, allowing piles and stacks of ‘documents’ to be built up.

There is a video of it running here (youtube) and the main ‘BumpTop’, as it’s called, website is here.

Oh… and there’s…

LCD vs CRT

Friday, July 7th, 2006

I’ve been a believer that CRT displays are better for colour than LCD screens for some time. This was with the exception of high end LCDs such as those by Lacie and Eizo.

Recently I managed to get hold of two Dell FP2001 LCD displays (they’re probably about 18 months old). I thought I would calibrate them and check them against my Iiyama HM204DT CRT display (about 2 or 3 years old).

To my surprise the initial…
