Virus checker slowdown

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

I have a virus checker installed on my Mac - I know crazy eh? Well, I like to be sure. The machine has all my work, photos, diary, contacts, etc on it. I do back-up as well, but I just like ‘belt and braces‘ as they say here in the UK.

The main criticism to this, when ever I tell anyone, is that Virus Barrier X4 slows my machine down so much. Admittedly it does a…

New Canon cameras & lenses

Friday, August 25th, 2006

Just a quick bit to say that Canon have released some new digital SLR equipment (links via DPReview). There is a long awaited update to the 70-200 f4 L lens, which now has a 4 stop image stabiliser. Well, it’s far from cheesy and I’ve not seem much playacting either… You can see the video of Steve Jobs here. Don’t miss the ‘PC Guy‘ address link on the same page (it’s on the start of the…

New HD format and Sony camcorders

Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006

Sony, Panasonic, Canon and others have agreed a new HD format for recording onto consumer camcorders.

It’s called AVCHD based on the H.264 format and allows recording of the HD image onto both conventional DVDs (ie BlueRay or HD-DVD not needed) and hard-drives - it will even allow recording onto memory cards.

The quality of H.264 is normally very good, it being a potentially high-quality version of MPEG-4. Apple’s technical brief is here and the H.264 Quicktime…

Sorry if anyone has experienced ‘database connection’ problems. I’m using a database on a different hosting service from my website and my website hosts decided to change the server ip addresses without telling anyone. :(

It should be fixed now.
