Focusing

Monday, October 30th, 2006

There’s a really interesting pair of articles on Luminous Landscape about focusing with digital cameras. See here & here. There are some very unusual ideas in here about how to set up your camera for shots requiring a deep depth of field.

Some of the techniques are going to be more usable than others. The software solution would seem to be only viable for studio shots of still subjects. Even then only if your customer’s require…

HP B9180 review

Friday, October 27th, 2006

Photo-I has finally managed to get a HP 8190 for review. The process is on-going at the time of this posting, so it’s only up to ‘first prints’ at the moment. More pages will be added later.

This is a very interesting printer and I’d pretty much decided I was going to buy one, but that was before Epson introduced the less advanced 3800 Pro (Flash site).

Epson’s printer will still fit in the space I have…

New Apple laptops

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

Apple have released updated versions of their MacBook Pros. They now feature Intel Core 2 Duo processors making them 39% faster than the (now ‘old’) Core Duo MacBook Pro.

Unfortunately, the mobile version of this chip appears not to be 64bit - if it was I’m sure Apple would be making a big thing about it and I can’t find anything say it is anywhere on their site. The version of this chip recently fitted to…

New, cheap, Visible Dust brush

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

Visible Dust have released a new (it’s been out a few weeks now) sensor cleaner called the “Arctic Butterfly SL 700“. It’s very similar to their other ‘portable’ kits, being supplied with it’s own case. There are missing features, you can’t fit a high-density brush but it’s cheaper than their previous brushes. The SL 700 does have the advantage of being very small though - see these comparative shots on Rob Galbraith’s website (which also…

Leica M8 review update

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

Reid Reviews (pay site) have posted the second part of their Leica M8 review.

It a sizeable review with a lot of images, including 100% crops of test shots. It’s compared with a Canon EOS 5D and stands up very, very well. The image quality at low ISO is stunning (helped by excellent quality lenses) and the noise performance is excellent up to 1600 ISO.

At 3200 ISO there is quite a lot of noise, but nothing…

LX2 disappointment

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

Well it was a likely event and it’s now confirmed. The sensor noise / noise reduction on the LX2 isn’t better than the LX1, in fact it looks worse. :(

You can see in the review here & here (DPReview) that while the levels of noise are reduced, it’s to the loss of detail. Why, oh why do manufactures do this? If they had just left the 7mp chip in and reduced the inherent noise…

100 posts

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

Well, it’s supposed to be some kind of milestone in blogging, so here goes…

100 posts!!! :D

Now in case you’re thinking this is a silly excuse for a 100th post, this is actually the 101st post, this one on a silly lens was the 100th. ;)

I’ve still got some olds posts from the original site to transfer across, so in the future this post isn’t going to look like the 101st, because the old…

Call that a lens, this is a lens…

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

The season of the insane lens does seem to be upon us. Another article on a very, very large medium format lens has been posted on Luminous Landscapes. It’s a lot smaller than the commissioned Zeiss one, but it’s still a huge 800mm lens for a Pentax 67II.

The image quality looks good, but I’m not sure I’d fancy carrying it, the huge tripod and head around though… ;)

Hand-made wide format

Friday, October 6th, 2006

Michael Reichmann has added a 6th and 7th Photokina 2006 videos to his site.

One focusing exclusively on a rather lovely wide format, hand-made camera. It’s digital back compatible and the company’s site (Gilde Kamera) is here.

The other covers the ‘rest’ of Photokina. ;)

It includes visitor statistics, some beautiful medium format products, Sony lenses for their α100, the latest Visible Dust products and lots more.

Hidden fields

Friday, October 6th, 2006

I’ve just spent a little time modifying the feedback form on the contact page.

I wanted to get rid of the nasty ‘?start=true’ part of the URL when you began the process of leaving feedback.

I changed the code to use hidden fields and the ‘POST’ method of sending data to the server. If you are interested in knowing what I did, I’ve written a short article on the method.
