Starcraft 2 to be released on Mac

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

There’s a piece on MacNN about Blizzard Entertainment doing a simultaneous release of Starcraft II on Windows and the Mac. This is interesting news since most games are released on Windows and converted to the Mac at a later date. Perhaps the growth in sales of Macs has finally lead companies to see it as a viable platform to develop for directly, instead of via 3rd parties?

Interesting new sensor

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

There’s a piece on Daily Tech about a new camera sensor which claims to be 2,000x more sensitive than any other sensor technology. Allowing clear images to be taken of scenes illuminated by only a single candle, 1 metre away.

What this equates to in ISO is unclear but it promises to be an interesting sensor for low light environments. What isn’t clear is how well it works in more standard illumination - such as a…

The truth of high ISO

Monday, May 21st, 2007

DPReview have placed a new article on their site giving the low-down on high ISO in compact cameras. The article was written to provide consumers with some information about what is actually possible and, more importantly, what isn’t.

If you’ve ever wondered why DSLRs produce better images at high ISO and why the Pro at the football match isn’t using the latest hyper-zoom compact to take their pictures, then take a look at this piece. …

Harlem in high res

Monday, May 14th, 2007

Gerard Maynard and Alexandre Jenny of Kodak have collaborated on a massively high resolution stitched panorama of Harlam in New York.

The scene is built up from 2,045 pictures taken on a Nikon D2X and results in an image with 13 gigapixels (13,000,000,000+). It took over 2 hours to capture the scene using a automated system and the final image size is 279,689 x 46,901 pixels.

You can view and zoom-into the image on this site. There’s also additional information on the artist and the techniques used.

Contribute CS3

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

Well, Contribute CS3 is now on my Mac and it’s time to compare its blogging capabilities with Ecto. At this time Ecto 3 is (still) not out and so I’m comparing with v2.4.2.

This is just a preliminary comparison and I’ll update when I’ve used CS3 more.

So that’s the first thing. I can actually use Contribute CS3 with WordPress 2.1. Adobe have fixed the issue with communication and overall connections are faster and smoother than with…

Dock Star

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

The standard e-mail package on the Mac, “Mail” is a pretty capable. It has almost all the features that most people need and it’s about to have a major upgrade in OSX 10.5.

It does, however, suffer from some shortcomings. These are noticeable in the somewhat under-powered rules, only allowing all parts of a rule to be ‘and-ed’ or ‘or-ed’. This means that you can’t build complex rules and you end up with a lot of…

1D Mk3 review

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

There’s a review of the Canon EOS 1D Mk3 on Luminous Landscape.

The review makes interesting reading and confirms that Canon have not provided a single-button Mirror Lockup function. :(

The ISO noise has been hugely improved though - with Michael Reichmann indicating a 2 stop (!) advantage over his EOS 1Ds Mk2. It will be interesting to see what the noise levels are like on the upcoming 1Ds Mk3.

Since the pixel-pitch on the 1D would only…
