New Canon Cameras

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

There was a interesting rumour piece on Northern Light’s site the other day (scroll down to the 18th) giving a block on information on the 40D, 1Ds Mk3, 5D replacement, etc, etc. They also had the spec of the 1Ds early as it was accidentally posted to Amazon.com.

Not unusual, there are a lot of these. But this one seemed reasonable and also stated that there would be an announcement about the 30D and G7…

0.008Mbit per second

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

Over the past few days my Power Mac has been driving me a little nuts. For some reason the internet connection has been dropping from the normal 5Mbit/s to about 0.008Mbit/s. This is so slow that it effectively seems like no connection at all. In fact on more than one occasion the AirPort has completely failed to connect to my router and hence the Internet! :(

The problem is that it’s random. Generally occurring when…

EA games ship, but…

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

EA have shipped 4 of their titles for the Mac - Battlefield 2142, Need for Speed Carbon, Harry Potter and Command & Conquer 3. They are available for order on the Apple store - see the MacNN post for more information.

There is a ‘but’ and it’s that they will only run on Intel based Macs because EA are not writing native Mac games but instead using the ‘Cider Portability Engine’. While this does allow the…

Google Ads & WordPress

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

If you’re a long time reader of the blog. Then you may have noticed that Google Ads have appeared on this blog.

I thought I would give them a try, even if they only create a small income it does help to pay for the servers. ;)

My main issue is with them being discreet - I don’t want flashing adverts, animations and terrible colours making the blog look a mess. Okay, this isn’t the best…

Worth a grand!

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

While looking for an update on Ecto 3, I came across the page where it’s stated the site is worth $1,000,000. I thought I’d have a look at how much this blog is worth…

My blog is worth $1,129.08.How much is your blog worth?

Okay, so it’s not a million (not even close) but a grand is not bad. ;)

iLife, iWork, iMac

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

Apple have released a iLife ‘08, iWork ‘08 and a new improved iMac.

The new iMac is very slim-line with either a 20" or 24" screen and a new super small keyboard. They utilise a 64bit Core 2 processor at up to 2.8GHz. The graphics chip has been upgraded to a HD 2400 XT or HD 2600 XT, with a maximum of 256Mb of video RAM.

Main memory is easier to add (just remove a single screw)…

EA failing to deliver?

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

There’s a piece on MacNN saying that the latest EA games, promised in Mac versions are taking a long time to be released. Even more worrying is the rumour that the games are not Mac native - they run under an emulator which is known not to be 100% bullet-proof - it has ‘issues’.

Finally, if you have a G4 or G5 Mac then forget it. If they are using this emulator then they…

Fuji F50fd looses lead? Megapixel race

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

This is a re-posting. The first version became deleted from the online database and various issue with Contribute have caused me to rewrite the entry from memory. Apologies to anyone who’s come back to the posting and finds it different from what they saw before.

F50fd

I’ve been keeping an eye open for reviews on the new F50fd. Like a number of other people on the web I was curious if Fuji could keep their 1…

Another Ricoh GX100 review

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

DPReview have posted a review of the GX100. At one point I’d been looking forward to this camera but ever since I found out that the RAW took over 4 seconds to store and has no buffer (ie the camera locks up), my interest has waned.

This is the second review I’ve seen but this one, whilst fair in some of the conclusion text, seems a little critical in it’s rating and image quality assessment. It…

Leica’s M future…

Saturday, August 4th, 2007

A recent article in the LFI, an interview with Steven K. Lee (the CEO) alluded to new products from Leica in their ‘M’ range.

This piece implied additions to the range in two areas. Firstly higher resolution models and secondly lower priced additions - particularly lenses.

This does indeed seem to be coming true with the announcement of 4 new lenses from Leica. These do not feature any aspherical elements (which are expensive to manufacture)…
