Lenses or Nikon?

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Canon have made a pre-PMA announcement of new products. They include a few new Powershot A series cameras and some new IXUS models (all with sensible pixel counts). Then there’s a new digital SLR - a replacement for the 400D, called (predictably enough) the 450D.

It’s an attractive entry level model and annoyingly with 12mp. I say annoyingly because I could really do with that many pixels but I don’t think I could put…

Ricoh GR Digital 2 reviews

Friday, January 18th, 2008

A couple of reviews of Ricoh’s new GR Digital 2 (GRD2) model have been posted. There’s an excellent, extensive article on Reid Reviews (pay site) and one has also been posted on PhotoReview.

This camera continues to interest me, it has a truly excellent little lens and the Reid Review article compares it very favourably to Canon’s G9. Ricoh appear to have managed to control noise in the new model. It’s just the lack of a…

HP’s new B series printer

Friday, January 18th, 2008

HP have announced a sister model to the B9180, called the B8850. It’s also A3+ but is designed for ‘advanced amateur photographers’. The printer retains the automatic, self-monitoring systems from the B9180 and is designed to fully integrate into Photoshop CS3 to aid colour management.

The display and network connection have been removed from this model but it retains USB2. The guts of the model appear to be very similar to the B9180 - is uses…

Portable drives get even bigger

Friday, January 18th, 2008

I wrote a post about the CES 2008 launch of Toshiba’s and Lacie’s new 320Gb portable drives. These seemed a sizable upgrade from the previous 160Gb units. However, G-Technology of trumped this with their new model.

At 500Gb this is a huge portable drive. The external (and quite large) drives on my desk are this size and they were the largest available about 2 years ago. The G-Drive Mini also has a triple interface…

iPhone January update

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

As previously shown (hacked) on a couple of sites, Apple have released an update for the iPhone. The firmware adds a number of new features…

  • Configurable home-screen icons, plus multiple home-screens. Up to 9 of them.
  • SMS messages with multiple recipients.
  • Location finder on the maps. This isn’t very accurate and the device really needs a built-in GPS receiver. There are also some additional features on the map - drop pins, hybrid view & real-time traffic information (does…

Virus Barrier X5

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Intego have updated their Mac anti-virus and firewall products. I know lots of people don’t think you need these and that’s fine, but personally I err on the side of caution with both VirusBarrier and NetBarrier installed.

They don’t use much processing power. Most of the time I don’t even notice them. Only the ‘check all files’ virus scan is intrusive. The new version is compatible with Tiger (10.4.x) and Leopard (10.5.x).

The software also has…

Bobcat - Garmin’s native Mac support

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Garmin have released Bobcat a new application for the Mac which allows waypoint & track management. It also imports GPX files and has various other features. It runs on PowerPC but I’m unsure about native Intel support - one would assume so, since it’s a new application.

The products in in Beta at the moment but it shows a lot of promise and its user interface is already an improvement on clunky one found in…

Apple have announced the new MacBook Air - ultra thin. There is a guided tour video which you can watch or download.

The case is beveled and runs from 4mm to 19mm (0.16 to 0.76 inches). The keyboard is backlit and it uses a 13.3″ wide-screen, LED lit LCD. The resolution is 1280 x 800 - the same as the normal MacBook. The ports are limited to a USB2, headphone and a Micro-DVI port -…

40D mini review

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

I’ve now had the 40D for a few months and I’ve settled into using it quite well. There are a lot of things to like about this camera and a few things which I don’t like in comparison with my old 1Ds (mk1).

I’ll get the bad points out of the way first…

  1. The viewfinder, while it’s very good for a 1.6x cropped camera (certainly much better than my father’s old 300D) it’s not a patch on…

CES 2008

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

The first major show of the year, CES 2008 has come and ends today. It’s unlikely anybody will make any major announcements so I thought I’d have a trawl through the news releases to see if anything interesting came along.

The main camera news seems to be a collection of compacts that support HD movie recording and some very slim and small models from Casio. The pixel count doesn’t seem to have gone up this year…
