Server changes

Monday, February 25th, 2008

I’ve had to change the server settings on this domain to make services available for another site. As a result you may see a loss of connection or interruptions in service for a short period.

This is temporary and everything should be back to normal soon. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

1Ds Mk3 down below £5,000

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Now the EOS 1Ds Mk3 has started to be held in stock and possibly some pressure from the Nikon D3, it’s price has dropped by over £1,000. Warehouse Express now lists it at £4,899 but they can’t shrink it’s physical size. I’d like to see a smaller full-frame Pro camera, the same kind of size as a 40D - a 5D Mk2 with 100% viewfinder and better weather sealing.

It’s also curious that Andy Rouse’s…

Router upgrades

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

I recently decided to update my Netgear DG834PN router. Previously I’ve performed this over the wireless network link and it has always work perfectly. Still, there’s a first time for everything and this time it failed. :(

The process just didn’t complete and after an hour (it’s only taken a few minutes before) I turned it off and back on. The result was a router which alternatively flashed the power on and self test leds…

40D dust

Friday, February 8th, 2008

I’ve now taken about 3,000 shots with my Canon 40D and overall it’s a good camera. The dust removal system is great, but it’s not perfect.

I decided to check the sensor today and setting the camera to f22, defocusing and shooting at the sky resulted in an image with several dust spots visible. Below is a 100% crop from a section of the sensor…

There are about 22 such spots on the sensor and you…

Leica’s novel customer support

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Leica have again shown themselves to be different from other manufactures in their support for customers. I suppose you could argue that they need to keep their customers loyal but the announcement (that passed me by at the time) on the 2nd goes quite far in terms of customer relations.

It states that they intend to roll out a series of upgrades to the current M8, which can be applied to customers current M8s.…

Sigma DP-1

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Sigma have released further information on the DP-1, stating that it will be released later this year and DPReview have even managed to publish a gallery of images taken with a Beta model.

This gallery includes a single 800 ISO image and it’s not bad. Certainly there’s not that much noise apparent and detail seems reasonably good, even in the corners. It’s difficult to gleam much from these images though as it’s not the finished product…

PMA ‘08, DSLR shake-up

Sunday, February 3rd, 2008

Well, PMA 2008 has now ended - all those hoping for Canon’s much rumoured 5D Mk2 or indeed any other small full-frame camera have been left disappointed.

What has been interesting is the change in the DSLR market at this show or rather the indication of changes to come this year. Canon have gone from having the only full-frame models and the highest resolution ‘Sports’ DSLR last year to suddenly being in an almost "catch-up" position.…
