Snow Leopard

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Apple’s next version of OSX - 10.6 or "Snow Leopard" - is rumoured to be dropping PowerPC support. It’s part of the efficiency drive - less space / more performance. Or it might just be the very early version of the developer’s preview? Still, PowerPC is going to be dropped at some point and that make it seems at least possible.

That means I’m going to need a new machine to use 10.6. Not that…

Sensor tech

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Is 2008 going to see a major change is sensor technology? There have been a number of recent news articles and rumours indicating a major jump in the sensitivity of chips and this could make Photokina ‘08 a very interesting show.

These changes in sensor technology by a number of companies, such as Sony with their ‘Back Illuminated’ sensor look as if they could deliver what Kodak’s refinements to the Bayer Pattern promised but didn’t really…

Pencils at the ready…

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Deke McClelland gives you 101 Photoshop ‘tips’ in 5 minutes but you’ll be lucky to remember them. Fortunately, the video is in a humorous format so you probably forgive him.

In other Photoshop news (kind-of), Sn4tchbuckl3r has followed up on Donnie’s award winningYou Suck At Photoshop‘ (YSAP) series with a very odd but funny series of videos entitled ‘Sn4tchbuckl3r’s Second Chance‘. The site also indicates that "Donnie has risen" and returns soon.

BTW, the videos are not really ‘work friendly’.

Illuminated dust

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

VistibleDust have introduced an innovative version of their 724 brush - the Arctic Butterfly 724 Brite.

This new version continues the integration of the spinning device (which charges / cleans the brush) and adds a LED to bathe the sensor in a blue glow. As a result you can now see more easily into the throat of the camera during the cleaning operation.

The brush’s spinning device has also been upgraded to to ensure more optimal RPMs, thereby increasing the charging effect.

GX200

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Ricoh have released the GX200 (Japanese site), an update to the GX100. A downloadable PDF can be found here (Japanese, 11Mb) along with posts on DPReview and PhotographyBlog. The latter has an additional piece containing sample images, including downloadable RAW files.

Fortunately these can be opened by Adobe Camera RAW out-of-the-box as they are DNG format. Something other manufactures could learn from. As far as I can tell, the RAW files top out at 200…

EOS going cheap

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

Canon have announced the 1000D (Rebel XS) today. As the 4 digit number would indicate, this slots in below the 3, 2 and 1 digit models - that is it’s below the 450D. The UK price is £499 (without a lens) making it £100 cheaper than the RRP of the 450D.

The spec is good too and very close to the 450D. It make me wonder if it’s going to impact on the sales of…

iPhone 3G

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

Apple have announced the much rumoured and anticipated 2nd generation iPhone. As expected it comes with GPS (assisted), 3G and a host of improvements in the v2.0 software.

The good news is that it’s faster and cheaper. That’s sure to annoy a few early adopters but it’s normal for new product lines.

Improvements (some seen in the software Beta) include…

  • Really good Enterprise connectivity for Microsoft Exchange. Home users can get similar functionality using the…

A somewhat disturbing gallery

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

This is another gallery that’s been on my to-do list for some time. It’s a collection of playground images from around the world but they are not ordinary, fun playgrounds. Instead, it’s a group of very odd images indeed.

Political pictures

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Since Barack Obama has now won, it’s my last chance to post this link which has been sitting on my list for some time.

Reuter’s have a web gallery of images by Jim Young. They date from late last year to early this year and are more a collection of political pictures rather than entirely to do with the election.
