Samsung APS-C hybrid

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Samsung have announced that they are going to make a new camera system using a APS-C sensor, interchangeable lenses and use a smaller body than a DSLR.

It sounds a lot like the Micro 4:3 system but they are reputedly going to use the sensor from the GX-20. This is definitely not a 4:3 system sensor.

Why they would decide not to go with the 4:3 system is unclear. Surely it would be better to have a…

Updated blog and adverts

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

I’ve updated the blog code today, making several changes…

  • The RSS feed, main blog post list, archive view and search now use ‘excerpts’ to make the list of posts easier to navigate. Before this, one post could extend down most of the page and make it difficult to see any new posts.
  • The format of the Google Adverts has been changed. I’ve noticed some insanely bad advertising on this site, seemingly because the only text being scanned…

Out-of-office backup

Friday, August 29th, 2008

I’m heading off up to the UK’s newest National Park, The Cairngorms for a break soon and decided to replace my exceedingly slow old backup drive with a brand-spanking-new model.

The issue with the old device was, while it was USB2 compatible it was only really USB1 speed. Transferring of data was at about 1Mb/sec on a good day. Which is very slow if you’ve just finished all your picture labelling for the day and want…

Got a Mac and a Nikon?

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

If you have a Apple Mac and a Nikon you might want to take a look at the press release on the Nikon / Microsoft agreement that’s just been announced.

There was some speculation that the NRW format used in the new Nikon P6000 might be locked into Windows and after seeing this I’m starting to think there may be some grounds for these concerns.

I using Canon equipment at the moment and while I had considered…

Another DSLR from Canon at Photokina?

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

The rumour mill is still buzzing with the possibility of another DSLR from Canon at Photokina. See Northlight Image’s page (28 August entry). There’s also some interesting bits on possible future technology from Canon on the 27th of August entry.

The question is, if they do release another DSLR will it be a model with video recording or a full-frame replacement for the 5D? There have been rumours of both but I personally hope, if there…

Nikon D90 sample videos

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Nikon have a number of sample movies taken with the new D90 on this page. They look pretty impressive but I still think it’s a shame the are not AVC based instead of Motion-JPEG.

Incidentally, Sony have released a new wide-screen digicam which also records 720p video but does use AVC. It’s the Cyber-shot T500. Recording is still limited though, this time to a maximum of 10 minutes per section. In other respects, this model is no match for the D90. ;)

D90 - first DSLR with video

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Well, it’s shaping as an interesting year in camera technology. Nikon have today announced the D90 with, of all things, video recording. There’s a preview piece here.

It’s an innovative idea and I suppose it stops you having to carry around a digicam for your video footage (or a camcorder ;) ). The huge sensor should give good image quality too. The only issue is the lack of a viewfinder during video capture - you have…

Canon G10 leaked too?

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Several sites are now listing the spec of the new Canon G10. They are all taken from a posting on PopPhoto.com (which is currently disabled).

Apparently the page read as follows, but I’d treat it as a rumour until Canon make it official…

Canon’s newest flagship compact packs 14.7 megapixels, a 28-140mm 5x zoom, a 3 inch 460K pixel LCD and DPP- supported RAW into a familiar, but not identical body as its predecessor. By Jack Howard…

Canon 50D and 18-200 IS lens

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

As expected, Canon today officially announce the 50D and partner it with a new 18-200 IS EF-S lens.

The leaked spec looks pretty much spot on (I’ve not crawled through it looking for differences) and it looks like a good upgrade. I particularly like…

  • The 50% increase in resolution over the 40D, putting the 50D back in front of the 450D.
  • ISO up to 12800. While it’s not going to be usable for stock photography, it will be…

Need a digicam for your active lifestyle?

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Olympus have announced the new μ 1050 SW, it’s small and very rugged.

It will reputedly survive a drop of 1.5 metres, submersion in water to 3m and temperatures down to -10°C. Ideal for beaches, a bit of snorkelling and skiing. It’s probably also (just) safe to give to your children - although with a price tag of £260 you might want to keep it to yourself.

Other features include a 10 mega-pixel sensor, 38-114mm (equivalent) zoom and a 2.7″ LCD. There’s no optical viewfinder.
